A Day of Mixed Emotions

Today was a day that I’ll always remember.  I used to tell myself how I wish I could better shoot spot news.  Whether that be a fire or a crime scene or etc… I’ve realized that I don’t like shooting in these situations.  It’s hard sometimes to justify what we do as photojournalists when it involves a person’s grief.  I was called out to an aftermath of a house fire that happened this morning.  As soon as I pulled up the family pulled up as well.  The resident began crying on her front steps and I knew I had to take the photo.  I think this photo is justified and maybe the community will be able to help this family, but who knows…

Afterword, I headed to a homecoming ceremony for 634th Brigade Support Battalion who were getting back from Afghanistan.  While most families were overcome with joy one family was overcome with sadness. Spc. Simone Robinson died from an I.E.D. and her family was there to welcome the soldiers home. I think in many ways it was when reality set in that Spc. Robinson wasn’t coming home…
